Letters to My Younger Self: Afiya Riley

Dear Younger Self,

In a world where there is so much pressure to fit in and have it all together, I want you to know that it’s actually okay not to be either of those things.

You’re not going to fit in

You’re not going to fit in because that’s not at all what you were created to do. You were designed to be uniquely you and in doing so, it means that you have to stand out because there’s only one you!

There is no other person who has the same combination of personality traits, skills, gifting, and everything that makes you who you are. You were made to stand out, not to fit in, so please, don’t ever feel like you can’t be your authentic self and have to change or camouflage just to be accepted. Those who are for you, will be for you and will love the true you.

Now, onto this idea that one can have it all together. For starters, what is this ‘it’ that we’re referring to? I think in most cases it’s life on a whole. However, in reality, how can one expect to have their whole life together and what does ‘together’ even look like?

I wanna let you know that having your life together is a myth. It’s a lie, a tall tale that should not be believed; better yet, never told. The truth is, we’re on this journey called life and a massive part of it is figuring out what that journey is supposed to look like.

The key to discovering your path is and always will be your faith in God!

Again, because you’re unique, your journey isn’t necessarily going to look like anyone else’s and that’s okay. In fact, it’s a great thing! How boring would it be if everyone’s life looked the same? The key however, to discovering your path, is and always will be your faith in God!

He has written each and every single one of your days and has the best plan for you. So take the unconventional route. Follow His lead, embrace the uncertainty and enjoy the adventure, knowing that your life is in the hands of the One who knows you best!

Your Younger Self,

Afiya
