If you had the opportunity to share advice with your younger self, what would you say?
Dear Friend,
Towards the end of 2020, I started working on a project called – Letters to My Younger Self.
If you are reading this, I’ve most likely mentioned that I’m looking for guest contributors and would like you to share a letter/s for this project.
As you will read in my blog below, the concept of the project is for individuals to share what they have learned over the years in a letter to their younger selves.
Click the button below to find out more about the project.
So what would you say to your younger self?
An opportunity to Reflect
I don’t know about you, but life can often be hectic at times. Reflecting is the first thing which tends to disappear from our routine, if it was apart of it.
Recently, i’ve been challenging myself to journal a lot more and I have found this to be extremely helpful during the pandemic.
If you are considering sharing a letter/s, I want to encourage you to not rush the process. if you are able to commit to the time, I’m sure you will find it encouraging and even healing as so many have testified.
An opportunity to Share
I hope that the authenticity of your story will encourage and bring healing to others as well, especially younger people. Here is some of the feedback from our readers so far:
Such beautiful words, our heavenly Father's heart. Thank you for sharing letters to your younger self.
Michael Maloney
Wow, I loved this! I struggled with binge eating for years so this really hit home. It was only when I allowed God to heal me from the inside that I was able to overcome that part of my life. Thank you for sharing x
Shoshanna Hudson
Sharing our history, our lives, is a way of building connections with others in a fractured society and world. We often feel like our life experiences are vastly different from others, which can contribute to a sense of loneliness, but this is so far from the truth. We have more in common than we often realise, I hope this project highlights this.
An opportunity to Write
Whether you are an accomplished writer, blogger or just keen to share, your story is important. You will be joining others who have shared a small part of their story.
“You do not need to be a qualified writer nor a best-selling author.”
If you’re up for joining us on this journey, you may want to have the following in mind for your letter/s:
Word limit – ideally 500 words with an upper limit of 700 words. If you go above 700 words you are possibly writing two or more letters.
Short sentences and paragraphs - Online readers attention span is limited, therefore, short sentences will help.
Feel free to use slang - this is not an academic piece of writing so please write in a style you feel most comfortable with. I am able to offer support by checking grammar and spelling if needed.
Pictures - If you have pictures to add to your letter/s that is fantastic. Please note - If you are sharing someone else’s image you will need to ensure you have their permission to do so and provide the evidence of this.
Diverse readership - you will need to be aware that this project has a diverse readership and it is more than likely that readers will not share your worldview, therefore, you will need to write in a way that is accessible to others. So please avoid using jargon or esoteric writing.
(esoteric - intended for or likely to be understood by only a small number of people with a specialized knowledge or interest.)
As you’re writing about your life journey, there are no strict parameters on the theme or content. You have the liberty to write about whatever you like. Please see some possible themes below:
Faith (if you have one) / Ministry,
Career / Profession,
Relationships and Self-discovery / Adulting,
Mental wellbeing,
Addictions
Childhood experiences
Dreams and Ambitions
Creativity and Passions
Social Action and Injustice,
Parenting.
What if I want to share Anonymously?
If you would like to share but would prefer to share anonymously, this can be facilitated.
All you need to do is to provide me with a pseudonym to submit your letter under.
An opportunity to Promote
If you vlog, blog or engage on social media (personally or for work), I am more than happy to add your social media to your letter signature.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
I look forward to journeying with you.
Nate
