Letters to My Younger Self: Stedroy Duberry

Dear Younger Me,

Keep your head held high! It’s okay that they don’t ‘get you, that’s because you’re unique. It’s all good man. Those tears you cry God understands and they’re making you stronger.

I know you don’t like Mum forcing you to go to church. I know you’re wondering why you have to go, you will one day appreciate it. You’ve done the right thing by giving your life to Christ. It will be a tough road but just know it’s an ongoing relationship with the Lord. Don’t beat up yourself if you’re not perfect every day. Don’t stop praying or feel like you’re not right with God after you make one mistake. You’ll make many mistakes, but God loves you. Embrace his grace and mercy that is new every morning.

Don’t beat up yourself if you’re not perfect every day…

Yes, I know you’re skinny right now but you’ll grow into manhood and be happy for those skinny genes. Trust me! Your sense of style will just get better. You’ll have your ‘glow up’ and be comfortable in yourself and your skin.

You’ll make some great friends! Friendships will become very important to you. You’ll value them a whole deal but sometimes to your detriment. Some of the people you know now are going to be lifelong friends and then along the way, you’ll meet some more that are going to be your backbones. You’ll be there’s too. You’ll also experience betrayal but it’s nothing you won’t get passed. You’ll be a great communicator and a source of encouragement to many. Many people will confide in you and value your opinion. You’ll experience heartbreak in unexpected ways but don’t worry, it’ll pass. It’ll be really hard and you’ll shed some tears and wonder why but it will pass.

Mate, you’re going to travel to some amazing places. You’ll see the world beyond where you are now and it will blow your mind. The experiences you’ll have are going to be life-changing in a good way.

Your career path will reveal itself in time. Don’t be shocked when it’s in line with what you do naturally – perform. You’ll be on stages you never thought you would, you’ll meet people you never thought you would. It will be a tough road with frustration but trust God, the process and the journey. It will be all worth it.

Focus on the things you can and let go of what you can't.

Stop trying to control things you can’t control. Focus on the things you can and let go of what you can't. You’ve got this bro! Do not worry! You’ll show them! All the confidence you need is sitting within you. People will appreciate your charisma and personality. You’ll touch many lives as you go on.

You’re destined for greatness, you’re a child of God which means you are full of favour! You’re going to get a job that will change your life for the better, you’re going to be able to bless your family and others. You’re going to meet people you never thought you would meet, you’re going to inspire, encourage and motivate. You, my brother, will fulfil your God-given destiny. Stay focused!

Love,

Your fine older self x
